Particle Metaphysics - Brigitte Falkenburg Gebunden
Anbieter: Weltbild AT Preis: 87,99 €The empirical successes of atomic nuclear and particle physics have not reduced -- and may never fully resolve -- the philosophical controversies about the inner constitution of matter. This book examines these debates by exploring the particle concept in physics. Are the particles of modern physics real or are they fictitious entities their existence deduced merely by the careless application of abstract theories? Or are the philosophers involved in the debate about scientific realism dedicating themselves to a problem that has long been solved by physicists? Studies of the experimental basis and theoretical relevance of the particle concept reveal that these questions are far from easy to answer because since the introduction of quantum theory physical science no longer possesses a single unambiguous particle concept. All those interested in the true meaning of such physical concepts will find this book informative and thought provoking. It is written at a level accessible to scholars students and teachers of science and philosophy.

Mind Values And Metaphysics Kartoniert (TB)
Anbieter: Weltbild AT Preis: 109,99 €There are three themed parts to this book: values ethics and emotions in the first part epistemology perception and consciousness in the second part and philosophy of mind and philosophy of language in the third part. Papers in this volume provide links between emotions and values and explore dependency between language meanings and concepts and topics such as the liar's paradox reference and metaphor are examined. This book is the second of a two-volume set that originates in papers presented to Professor Kevin Mulligan covering the subjects that he contributed to during his career. This volume opens with a paper by Moya who proposes that there is an asymmetrical relation between the possibility of choice and moral responsibility. The first part of this volume ends with a description of foolishness as insensitivity to the values of knowledge by Engel. Marconi's article makes three negative claims about relative truth and Sundholm notes shortcomings of the English language for epistemology amongst other papers. This section ends with a discussion of the term 'subjective character' by Nida-Rümelin who finds it misleading. The third part of this volume contains papers exploring topics such as the mind-body problem whether theory of mind is based on simulation or theory and Künne shows that the most common analyses of the so-called 'Liar' paradox are wanting. At the end of this section Rizzi introduces syntactic cartography and illustrates its use in scope-discourse semantics. This second volume contains twenty nine chapters written by both high profile and upcoming researchers from across Europe North America and North Africa. The first volume of this set has two main themes: metaphysics especially truth-making and the notion of explanation and the second theme is the history of philosophy with an emphasis on Austrian philosophy.

Macroscopic Metaphysics - Paul Needham Kartoniert (TB)
Anbieter: Weltbild AT Preis: 98,99 €This book is about our ordinary concept of matter in the form of enduring continuants and the processes in which they are involved in the macroscopic realm. It emphasises what science rather than philosophical intuition tells us about the world and chemistry rather than the physics that is more usually encountered in philosophical discussions. The central chapters dealing with the nature of matter pursue key steps in the historical development of scientific conceptions of chemical substance. Like many contemporary discussions of material objects it relies heavily on mereology. The classical principles are applied to the mereological structure of regions of space intervals of time processes and quantities of matter. Quantities of matter which don't gain or lose parts over time are distinguished from individuals which are typically constituted of different quantities of matter at different times. The proper treatment of the temporal aspect of the features of material objects is a central issue in this book which is addressed by investigating the conditions governing the application of predicates relating time and other entities. Of particular interest here are relations between quantities of matter and times expressing substance kind phase and mixture. Modal aspects of these features are taken up in the final chapter.

Mind Values And Metaphysics Kartoniert (TB)
Anbieter: Weltbild AT Preis: 109,99 €This book addresses five main topics of metaphysics in its first section: formal objects and truth-makers; tropes; properties and predicates; varieties of relations; and the notion of explanation in metaphysics. The second part of this volume focuses on the history of philosophy with an emphasis on Austrian philosophy: the ideas of Bolzano Wittgenstein Locke and Bergson amongst others are explored in the papers presented here. This is the first volume in a two-volume set that originates from papers presented to Professor Kevin Mulligan covering the subjects that he contributed to during his career including ontology mind and value history and philosophy of mind and philosophy of language. This volume contains thirty two chapters written by researchers from across Europe North America and North Africa. These papers cover topics in metaphysics ranging from Lehrer and Tolliver's discussion of truth and tropes to Johansson's defence of the distinction between thick and thin relations and Persson and Sahlin's presentation of the difficulties inherent in applying the concept of explanation in metaphysics. Papers on the history of philosophy include a look at Bolzano's formative years and his conception of mathematics. De Libera examines Brentano's adverbial theory of judgment and Fisette traces the history of the Philosophical Society of the University of Vienna in the late 19th and early 20th century. Marion contests the trendy pragmatist accounts that lump Wittgenstein and Heidegger together and there are analyses of Locke and Bergson's work amongst the many papers presented here. This volume contains three chapters in French and one in Spanish. The second volume of this set looks at ethics values and emotions epistemology perception and consciousness as well as philosophy of mind and philosophy of language.

Kant's Moral Metaphysics Kartoniert (TB)
Anbieter: Weltbild.at Preis: 19,95 €Morality has traditionally been understood to be tied to certain metaphysical beliefs: notably in the freedom of human persons (to choose right or wrong courses of action) in a god (or gods) who serve(s) as judge(s) of moral character and in an afterlife as the locus of a final judgment on individual behavior. Some scholars read the history of moral philosophy as a gradual disentangling of our moral commitments from such beliefs. Kant is often given an important place in their narratives despite the fact that Kant himself asserts that some of such beliefs are necessary (necessary at least from the practical point of view). Many contemporary neo-Kantian moral philosophers have embraced these disentangling narratives or at any rate have minimized the connection of Kant's practical philosophy with controversial metaphysical commitments even with Kant's transcendental idealism. This volume re-evaluates those interpretations. It is arguably the first collection to systematically explore the metaphysical commitments central to Kant's practical philosophy and thus the connections between Kantian ethics his philosophy of religion and his epistemological claims concerning our knowledge of the supersensible.

Meta-Metaphysics - Jiri Benovsky Kartoniert (TB)
Anbieter: Weltbild AT Preis: 54,99 €Metaphysical theories are beautiful. At the end of this book Jiri Benovsky defends the view that metaphysical theories possess aesthetic properties and that these play a crucial role when it comes to theory evaluation and theory choice. Before we get there the philosophical path the author proposes to follow starts with three discussions of metaphysical equivalence. Benovsky argues that there are cases of metaphysical equivalence cases of partial metaphysical equivalence as well as interesting cases of theories that are not equivalent. Thus claims of metaphysical equivalence can only be raised locally. The slogan is: the best way to do meta-metaphysics is to do first-level metaphysics. To do this work Benovsky focuses on the nature of primitives and on the role they play in each of the theories involved. He emphasizes the utmost importance of primitives in the construction of metaphysical theories and in the subsequent evaluation of them.He then raises the simple but complicated question: how to make a choice between competing metaphysical theories? If two theories are equivalent then perhaps we do not need to make a choice. But what about all the other cases of non-equivalent equally good theories? Benovsky uses some of the theories discussed in the first part of the book as examples and examines some traditional meta-theoretical criteria for theory choice (various kinds of simplicity compatibility with physics compatibility with intuitions explanatory power internal consistency ...) only to show that they do not allow us to make a choice. But if the standard meta-theoretical criteria cannot help us in deciding between competing non-equivalent metaphysical theories how then shall we make that choice? This is where Benovsky argues that metaphysical theories possess aesthetic properties - grounded in non-aesthetic properties - and that these play a crucial role in theory choice and evaluation. This view as well as allthe meta-metaphysical considerations discussed throughout the book then naturally lead the author to a form of anti-realism and at the end of the journey he offers reasons to think better of the kind of anti-realist view he proposes to embrace. www.jiribenovsky.org
