Natriumionen hinterlassen, im Gegensatz zu Calciumionen oder Magnesiumionen keine schwer löslichen Salzränder. Das enthaltene Harz ist ein großporiger saurer Kationenaustauscher. Ein Kationenaustauscher ist ein Ionenaustauscher, mit dem gelöste Ionen durch andere Ionen gleicher Ladung (bei Calcium und Magnesium: 2+) ersetzt werden können. Die auszutauschenden Ionen werden am Ionenaustauschermaterial gebunden, das seinerseits dafür eine äquivalente Stoffmenge von vorher gebundenen Ionen in die Lösung abgibt. Beispielsweise kann ein Kationen-Ionenaustauscher Calcium-Kationen, die im normalen Leitungswasser gelöst sind gegen Natrium-Kationen, die an den Ionenaustauscher gebunden sind, austauschen. Solche Kationen-Ionenaustauscher sind auch in Geschirrspülern vorhanden. In ihnen wird für Spülvorgänge Wasser aufbereitet, das von Calcium-Kationen frei ist, die sonst zur Bildung von Kalkflecken führen würden. Wenn dieser Kationen-Austauscher erschöpft und vollständig mit Calcium-Kationen abgesättigt ist, muss er regeneriert werden. Das geschieht dadurch, dass man die gebundenen Calcium-Kationen durch das einer möglichst hoch konzentrierten Lösung von Natriumchlorid (Kochsalz) wieder verdrängt. Classification of chromatographic methods Chromatography is the name given to a particular family of separation techniques of great effectiveness. The original method was described in 1903 by Tswett, who used it for the separation of coloured substances, and the name chromatog­ raphy stems from this. However, the limitation to coloured compounds never really obtained, and most chromatographic separations are nowadays performed on mixtures of colourless substances, including gases. Like fractional distillation, chromatography relies on the relative movement of two phases, but in chromatography one is fixed and is known as the stationary phase; the other is known as the mobile phase. Chromatographic methods may be classified first according to the nature of the mobile phase and, second, according to the nature of the stationary phase. The mobile phase may be a liquid or a gas, and the stationary phase may be a solid or a liquid. There are thus four main sub-divisions of the chromatographic process, as set out in Table 1.1. The system is called adsorption chromatography if the stationary phase is a solid, and partition chromatography if it is a liquid.

In the past the determination of inorganic ions, particularly anions, meant laborious, time-con­ suming, and often not very sensitive "wet chemieal" methods. In the last ten years that has changed radically as ion chromatography has supplanted these older methods.

THE remarkable capabilities of capillary gas partition chromatography (or, in short, capillary chromatography) are beyond all doubt. In spite of this, difficulties are continually arising in the experimental realization of this interesting development of gas chromatography, and this hinders the rapid acceptance of these methods. For this reason, in the present work I have dealt with experimental and practical problems rather than with theoretical aspects, hoping that this may serve to remove many of the problems con­ cerned. The present publication is based on experimental work carried out in productive collaboration with my teachers and colleagues, to whom I owe a great deal. THE present volume, which is the first of a three-volume work on gas phase chromatography, deals with the problems of gas chromatography in packed columns. Gas chromatography, like any other analytical method, is mainly a matter of practical skill, and therefore emphasis has been given to the apparatus at the expense of a more detailed presentation of the theory. The aim of this book is to make lecturers and students, chemists, works engineers and laboratory workers familiar with this highly effective branch of analytical physical chemistry. I hope too that the experienced worker may find references which will be of value to him in his work and which will spare him part of the now almost impossible task of keeping up to date with the literature. The nomenclature used here is the result of a number of discussions with Professor E. Cremer and Dr. E. Bayer, and I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my grateful thanks to them. The present book is based partly on my book Gas Chromatography which appeared at the end of 1959. Numerous discussions with Professor E. Leibnitz and his colleagues H. P. Angele, M. Hofmann, H.
