Humana Press Liver Transplantation
Anbieter: Link.springer.com Preis: 160,49 €Liver Transplantation: Challenging Controversies and Topics grew out of a need I perceived within the fields of transplant hepatology and liver transplantation. Liver transplantation has rightly gained recognition as an established therapy for end-stage liver disease. Few would argue that liver transplantation is one of the few truly lifesaving and life-altering treatments within medicine and surgery. Not many realize that 20 years passed from the time of the first human liver transplantation in 1963 to its acceptance as therapy by the 1983 NIH Consensus Conference on Liver Transplantation. In 2008, 25 years will have passed since the 1983 NIH conference—a mere 25 years for a field that has provided patients hope, doctors options, and to some the “gift of life. ” Many issues in liver transplantation involve indications, patient selection, and outcomes after transplantation—these are standard topics, covered by textbooks of hepatology and transplantation. In contrast, the field of liver tra- plantation is young, evolving, dynamic, and issues and decisions are often controversial. Thus, Dr. Trotter and I, as well as our colleagues at the University of Colorado, felt that a text with a different focus was required, one that highlighted controversy and challenged dogma. Out of this perceived need emerged Liver Transplantation: Challenging Controversies and Topics. To meet the transplant community’s need for emerging information about liver transplantation, Dr. Larry Chan, Dr. Igal Kam, and I initiated the Controversies in Transplantation Conference.

Epubli Transplantationsgesetz - TPG 2025
Anbieter: Thalia.de Preis: 9,99 €Das Transplantationsgesetz (TPG) schafft in Deutschland den gesetzlichen Rahmen für die Organspende und Transplantation. Springer Milan Hand transplantation
Anbieter: Link.springer.com Preis: 299,59 €Transplanting a limb has been a dream of humanity – until 1998 when an international team of surgeons gathered in Lyon, France, and performed the first hand transplantation in history. Since then, groups in the United States, China, Austria, Italy and Belgium have launched hand transplantation programmes. In 2002, the International Registry on Hand and Composite Tissue Transplantation (IRHCTT) was created with the purpose of collecting and analysing data from every centre. This book presents the global experimental and clinical experience on hand transplantation and all types of other composite tissue allografts so far performed. A complete review of all aspects of these innovative and ground-breaking procedures is clearly presented in 15 different sections. They include the experimental basis of hand transplantation, strategies for selecting ideal candidates and preparing successful hand transplantation programmes, surgical techniques, most effective immunosuppressive drug regimes, analysis of the unique immunological behaviour of these transplants and rehabilitation protocols to achieve optimal sensory and motor recovery. Each section is dedicated to a special issue, such as psychological and medicolegal implications, brain remodelling after hand transplantation and introduction of a new scoring system for overall comprehensive outcome evaluation. A complete list of composite tissues allografts currently carried out around the world is reported in detail, including the face, abdominal wall, uterus, larynx and knee joint. This book is a milestone in the medical literature and represents a great asset for every scientific library.

Its development has revolutionized medicine, as demonstrated by the fact that a large number of researchers in this field have been awarded Nobel Prizes. In the beginning of this century, we are witnessing with great expectations the emergence of a new field of medicine related to the arrival of a new player on the scene: “stem cells” and their potential use in regenerative medicine. This volume aims to cover important aspects of the various facets of organ transplantation and regenerative medicine, with leading specialists in these fields setting out their vision. We try to rigorously explain current and novel scientific research in these fields—areas which arouse great interest from society in general, due to their potential use in modern medicine for the treatment of a great number of diseases.

Steinkopff Lung Transplantation
Anbieter: Link.springer.com Preis: 106,99 €Clinical lung transplantation has seen an early start within the history of solid organ trans plantation, marked by the 1963 first lung transplant by James D. Hardy. This was prompted by the seemingly easy way of joining the transplanted organ to the recipient by me ans of a few well-defined anastomoses, i.e. bronchus, pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein carry ing left atrial cuff. The following decade thus witnessed a number of such mostly unilateral lung transplants in several centres, in Germany represented by the two only lung transplants performed by E. S. Bücherl, then at the Neukölln City Hospital in Berlin in 1969. As with most other such attempts these two patients suffered early and lethai graft failure. There was only one single lung transplant patient who lived up to ten months after the transplant at Gent, Belgium, having been operated on by Derom in 1969. The alm ost universal failure during this initial phase was attributed to bronchial anasto motic insufficiency, pulmonary infection of either the transplanted lung or the left-in-place contralateral lung and a far-reaching lack of knowledge how to cope with transplant rejec tion. In the early 1970s it had become gene rally accepted that lung transplantation could not be performed successfully.

Springer US Blood Stem Cell Transplantation
Anbieter: Link.springer.com Preis: 320,99 €Blood Stem Cell Transplantation conveys the excitement that accompanies the newest developments in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Some of the applications that stand to impact this field most significantly are based on recent advances in the biological sciences, as demonstrated by the chapters on gene therapy, on the detection of minimal residual disease using molecular techniques, and on the use of radioimmunoconjugates targeting lymphoma and leukemia-associated antigens. Others are the results of clinical observations - e.g., the association between graft-versus-host- disease (GVHD) and durable remissions that have led to creative clinical experiments such as donor leukocyte infusions (DLI). Attempts to unravel the biological events that underlie the responses seen in patients with relapsed chronic myelogenous leukemia treated with DLI are likely to provide the basis for future refinements in this clinical approach. Hopefully, improved response rates and reduced toxicity will result. The power of the immunologic response in controlling malignant disease is underscored in the chapter on post-transplant immunotherapy. The complex immunologic process that results in clinical GVHD may be dissected and engineered to provide clinical benefits that include, in addition to its antineoplastic effects, the amelioration of its clinical manifestations. Better control of GVHD with less global immunosuppression will facilitate the use of mismatched and unrelated donors. This area of investigation perfectly illustrates the continued interplay between the laboratory and the clinic. The continued cross-fertilization of ideas between immunologists, molecular biologists and clinical investigators is likely to yield important advances in this field for years to come. Possible applications of stem cell transplantation continue to grow with the identification of alternative sources of stem cells and the potential to engineer and/orexpand the graft. Although the use of unrelated and mismatched donors continues to increase, the possibilities associated with umbilical cord blood transplantation are legion, especially if stem cells can be expanded ex vivo to provide grafts for full-sized adults. Using techniques in which contaminating malignant cells may be eliminated from autografts through positive selection, autologous transplantation may prove highly effective, especially when coupled with post-transplant immunotherapy. Some of these same methodologies have helped facilitate the use of autologous grafts for transplantation in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia without allogeneic donors. Advances in the supportive care of transplant patients, including the pretransplant identification of those at risk from pulmonary complications and the use of cytokines to speed engraftment, have reduced morbidity and mortality to such a degree that it is appropriate to consider high-dose therapy and stem cell reconstitution in patients with nonmalignant diseases....
