This collection of 29 papers grew out of a symposium entitled "Setting the Future Agenda for Neotropical Primates. " The symposium was held at the Department of Zoo­ logical Research, National Zoological Park, Washington D. C. , on February 26-27, 1994, and was sponsored by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, Smith­ sonian Institution, and Friends of the National Zoo. We put the symposium together with two objectives: to honor Warren G. Kinzey for his contributions to the growing field of platyrrhine studies and to provide researchers who work in the Neotropics with the oppor­ tunity to discuss recent developments, to identify areas of research that require additional study, and especially to help guide the next generation of researchers. The symposium provided the opportunity to recognize Warren as a mentor and col­ laborator to the contribution of the study of platyrrhines. Contributions to the book were expanded in order to provide a more comprehensive view of platyrrhine evolution and ecology, to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of many of these studies, and to high­ light the central role that New World monkeys play in advancing primatology. If this vol­ ume were to require major revisions after just one more decade of research, that would be a fitting testament to Warren's enthusiasm and his drive to continually update the field with new ideas and methods. In addition the book covers topics such as threats and conservation strategies for these nocturnal birds of prey from 18 Neotropical countries. Owls are a good example of diversification processes and have developed evolutionary characteristics themselves. These species are found almost everywhere in the world but most of them are distributed in tropical areas and about a third of them live in the Neotropics. This biogeographic region has a high biodiversity and even share lineages of species from other continents because at some point all were part of Pangea. Although we still have much to know and understand about this diverse, scarcely studied and threatened group this work aims to be a precedent for future and further research on the subject.

This checklist does not supercede any other because it is the first of its kind for the Neotropical region. It represents the cUlmination of several years preparation by the con­ tributing authors and editor, following the initiation of the "Atlas" project in the autumn of 1978. The collaborators to the project continue their work, either for "Atlas" fascicles or for the more immediate completion of the remaining five parts of the checklist. The goal of the project is to provide a foundation work on the Neotropical Lepidoptera, illustrated to the extent possible and encompassing a detailed text covering the basic data known for each described species (original citation, synonymy, diagnosis, range, flight per­ iod and hosts). New species will be described as each author finds useful, but the primary purpose is initially to document all the species already known. Efforts to document the Lepidoptera faunas of individual countries in Latin America are relatively illogical, since in most cases upwards of 80% of the entire Neotropical fauna is represented in each coun­ try having tropical forest and, thus, such works would have to deal with most of the conti­ nental fauna. The "Atlas" project covers the entire region to begin with but as a coopera­ tive project among all New World nations.

The book focuses primarily on addressing issues of a wide array of mammalian species from a population level in different habitats and ecosystems across the Neotropical region.
