Grimmelshausen (1622-1676), der seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit unter verschiedenen Decknamen begann, legte sein Hauptwerk mit dem Roman in fünf Büchern "Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus" 1668 vor. In diesem Werk, das zu den bedeutendsten literarischen Dokumenten der Barockzeit zählt, verarbeitete Grimmelshausen eine Reihe von Vorlagen. Er folgte z. B. der Tradition des spanischen Schelmenromans, verwendete Motive aus Eschenbachs "Parzifal" und aus der volkstümlichen Schwank- und Sagenliteratur. Die Geschichte vom "Einfältigen", der sich auf das Abenteuer einer Weltreise einlässt und der Welt am Ende als Einsiedler entsagt, ist bis heute mit ihrer komplexen Erzählstruktur, dem bisher nicht völlig entschlüsselten Kompositionsprinzip und ihrer inhaltlichen Vieldeutigkeit Gegenstand kontroverser Interpretationen geblieben.
