In recent period we have experienced a further rapid and explosive development of scientific knowledge concerning bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The International Con­ gress of Chemotherapy in London in 1975 dealed with bacterial resistance in many ses­ sions and lectures. We are aware of the fact that also the World Health Organisation in Brussels in 1975 discussed the problem as an integral part of long-term programme in environmental pollution control. A special significance should be ascribed to the discussions concerning the safety of DNA research which ran in several countries as well as on meetings of scientifics involved in the research of recombinant DNA molecules. This problem was also discussed in the meeting of Advisory Committee of World Health Organisation in 1975. On the programme of this Symposium in Smolenice, there are environmental conse­ quences of plasmids, medical aspects of their pools and circulation and their genetics and molecular biology.

However, we now know that they are fairly frequently occurring plasmids in bacterial and eukaryotic species. Viral strategies to avoid shortening of the linear molecules during replication imply a common ancestry. Linear plasmids may be beneficial, neutral or detrimental for the respective host; functions include production of protein toxins, specific catabolic capabilities, antibiotic resistance, pathogenicity factors, and senescence induction. Microbial Linear Plasmids constitutes the first attempt to comprehensively assemble current knowledge of different types of such elements, highlight recent developments in the field, and challenge the distinction between viruses and linear plasmids.

Antibiotics are one of the greatest benefits science ever gave to mankind and one of the few things that cannot be misused against the man. Thus, the starting point of all our efforts is highly humanistic, and is expressed by cordial athmosphere in which we all work and communicate on a wide international basis. All our efforts are aimed to preserve the antibiotics as effective tools in medical treat­ ment, and thus we must deal with antibiotic resistance. Owing to it many antibiotics are slowly retreating from the first line of the battle between the man and pathogens. But new drugs are coming and we must check them very carefully to assure their efficiency as long as possible. In this process of inactivation of antibiotics, infectious resistance factors are today on the scene not only of clinicians, epidemiologists or hygienists, but equally, if not more, of geneticists and molecular-biologists. This is why we all were together in Smolenice to exchange our ideas and experience.

This book resulted from presentations at an international conference on bacterial p1asmids held January 5-9, 1981 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This was the first meeting of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The meeting place was selected for its relaxed and comfortable climate, conducive to interactions among participants. More importantly the locale facilitated the participation of nearby Latin American clinical and research scientists who deal directly with the health manifestations of pathogenic p1asmids. Diseases and socio-economic practices of developing countries exist in the Dominican Republic whose scientific community could directly benefit from having the meeting there. The book includes the talks as well as extended abstracts of poster presentations from the meeting. This combination, which provides readers with reviews as well as recent findings, captures the full scientific exchange which took place during the 5-day meeting. As one indication of pathogenicity related to p1asmids, the conferees were surveyed for gastro-intestina1 problems during and after their stay in the Dominican Republic. The results are summarized at the end of this book.
