Die von Fürst Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Sachsen-Anhalt 1765 gegründete Anlage war einst Teil seines Programms zur Landesverschönerung. »Hier ists jetzt unendlich schön«, schwärmte Johann Wolfgang von Goethe über den Park, den Fürst Leopold III. Friedrich Franz im späten 18. Jahrhundert nahe Dessau angelegt hat. »Es ist (...) wie ein Märchen, das einem vorgetragen wird.« Das Gartenreich Wörlitz, so erlebten es schon damals Besucher, bietet eine Zuflucht vor den Gefahren des Daseins.
