Geplagt von immer stärkeren Krankheitsschüben zieht er sich immer weiter zurück in eine weitgehende Isolation. Nach ersten Anzeichen beginnenden Größenwahns erleidet er im Januar des Jahres 1889 ¿ wohl infolge einer Syphiliserkrankung ¿ einen geistigen Zusammenbruch und wird in eine Irrenanstalt eingewiesen. Zunächst pflegt die Mutter, später die Schwester den geistig Umnachteten. Am 25. He takes on the task of seeking the truth - "to aim straight", as Nietzsche puts it - and finds his answer after much soul-searching.
