Cognition and Survey Research
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 83.52 $Survey methods research--an interdisciplinary approach. Introducing the theory and tools of cognitive aspects of survey methodology (CASM)--a movement that has greatly contributed to the evolving field of survey methods research--this collection of monographs explores advances in the use of cognitive psychology and other sciences to improve the quality of data collected in surveys. In 22 articles commissioned specifically for this volume, leading survey researchers, social scientists, and statisticians from around the globe evaluate the advantages of interdisciplinary survey techniques, focusing on the many contributions of the CASM movement and drawing on such disciplines as statistics, cognitive psychology, sociology, behavioral sciences, anthropology, linguistics, and computer sciences. The authors explain basic concepts and methodologies and demonstrate the application of cognitive theory to all phases of survey research, including data processing, analysis, presentation, and administration. They provide a critical review of the history and findings of CASM-oriented research and describe useful cognitive models used in survey testing and design. Also, the authors discuss the expanding role of computer technologies and statistical advances in the interdisciplinary aspects of survey methods and draw a roadmap for interdisciplinary survey research into the twenty-first century. Clearly written and supplemented with extensive references and more than 80 figures and charts, Cognition and Survey Research is an indispensable guide for statisticians and professionals who would like to be at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary survey methods research involving the social, cognitive, computer, or statistical sciences.

Cognition ,Computation , & Consciousness
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 91.79 $The topic of consciousness is truly multidisciplinary, attracting researchers and theorists from diverse backgrounds. It is now widely accepted that previously disparate areas all have contributions to make to the understanding of the nature of consciousness. Thus, we now have computational scientists, neuroscientists, and philosophers all engaged in the same effort. This book illustrates these three approaches, with chapters provided by some of the most important and provocative figures in the field. The first section is concerned with philosophical approaches to consciousness. One of the fundamental issues here is that of subjective feeling or qualia. The second section focuses on approaches from cognitive neuroscience. Patients with different types of neurological problems, and new imaging techniques, provide rich sources of data for studying how consciousness relates to brain function. The third section includes computational approaches looking at the quantitative relationship between brain processes and conscious experience. Cognition, Computation, and Consciousness represents a uniquely integrated and current account of this most fascinating and intractable subject.

Cognition
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 171.00 $The study of human cognitive processes provides insight into why we act or react and can help us predict future behaviors. In Cognition, authors Thomas Farmer and Margaret Matlin present an engaging and highly relatable examination of how these processes work, and how they are responsible for the way we perceive and interpret the world around us. Broad in scope without sacrificing depth of detail, this text emphasizes the link between conceptual cognitive psychology and real-world experience; case studies, current trends, and historical perspectives merge to provide a comprehensive understanding of core principles and theories. This new Tenth Edition has been updated to reflect the latest research, technology, and thinking, with more in-depth coverage of topics rising to prominence in the field’s current knowledge base. Expanded explanations balance classical and contemporary approaches to specific topics, while additional experiments and an emphasis on methodology and experimental design are included to facilitate a greater appreciation of the field’s rigorous research.

Cognition-Based Assessment & Teaching of Addition and Subtraction: Building on Students' Reasoning (Cognition-based Assessment and Teaching)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.83 $"For many students, traditional instruction is so distant from their needs that each day they make little or no learning progress and fall farther and farther behind curriculum demands. In contrast, Cognition-Based Assessment offers a framework to support teaching that enables ALL students to understand, make personal sense of, and become proficient with mathematics." -Michael Battista Designed to work with any curriculum, Cognition-Based Assessment and Teaching will enable you to better understand and respond to your students' learning needs and help you choose instructional activities that are best for them. Michael Battista offers a powerful, learning-progressions model for maximizing each student's progress- helping students who are behind catch up, preventing future failures from occurring, and helping students who are ready move quickly ahead. Cognition-Based Assessment and Teaching will help you will all three tiers in RTI. Battista's approach emphasizes three key components that support students' mathematical sense making and proficiency: Determining students' levels of sophistication in reasoning Assessing and monitoring the development of students' understanding of core ideas Differentiating instruction to meet individual students' learning needs Using a research-based framework that describes the development of students' thinking and learning in terms of levels of sophistication, a "cognitive terrain" that includes ascents and plateaus, Battista shows how teachers can build on their students' reasoning with instruction that keeps them moving ever upwards. Also available: Multiplication and Division Place Value Fractions

The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 77.27 $In this book, David Temperley addresses a fundamental question about music cognition: how do we extract basic kinds of musical information, such as meter, phrase structure, counterpoint, pitch spelling, harmony, and key from music as we hear it? Taking a computational approach, Temperley develops models for generating these aspects of musical structure. The models he proposes are based on preference rules, which are criteria for evaluating a possible structural analysis of a piece of music. A preference rule system evaluates many possible interpretations and chooses the one that best satisfies the rules. After an introductory chapter, Temperley presents preference rule systems for generating six basic kinds of musical structure: meter, phrase structure, contrapuntal structure, harmony, and key, as well as pitch spelling (the labeling of pitch events with spellings such as A flat or G sharp). He suggests that preference rule systems not only show how musical structures are inferred, but also shed light on other aspects of music. He substantiates this claim with discussions of musical ambiguity, retrospective revision, expectation, and music outside the Western canon (rock and traditional African music). He proposes a framework for the description of musical styles based on preference rule systems and explores the relevance of preference rule systems to higher-level aspects of music, such as musical schemata, narrative and drama, and musical tension.
