L. P. Hartley The Go-between
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 13.73 € (+2.70 €)L.P. Hartley's moving exploration of a young boy's loss of innocence The Go-Between is edited with an introduction and notes by Douglas Brooks-Davies in Penguin Modern Classics.\n\n'The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there'\n\nWhen one long, hot summer, young Leo is staying with a school-friend at Brandham Hall, he begins to act as a messenger between Ted, the farmer, and Marian, the beautiful young woman up at the hall. He becomes drawn deeper and deeper into their dangerous game of deceit and desire, until his role brings him to a shocking and premature revelation. The haunting story of a young boy's awakening into the secrets of the adult world, The Go-Between is also an unforgettable evocation of the boundaries of Edwardian society.\n\nLeslie Poles Hartley (1895-1972) was born in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, and educated at Harrow and Balliol College, Oxford. For more than thirty years from 1923 he was an indefatigable fiction reviewer for periodicals including the Spectator and Saturday Review. His first book, Night Fears (1924) was a collection of short stories; but it was not until the publication of Eustace and Hilda (1947), which won the James Tait Black prize, that Hartley gained widespread recognition as an author. His other novels include The Go-Between (1953), which was adapted into an internationally-successful film starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates, and The Hireling (1957), the film version of which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.\n\nIf you enjoyed The Go-Between, you might like Barry Hines's A Kestrel for a Knave, also available in Penguin Modern Classics.\n\n'Magical and disturbing'\nIndependent \n\n'On a first reading, it is a beautifully wrought description of a small boy's loss of innocence long ago. But, visited a second time, the knowledge of approaching, unavoidable tragedy makes it far more poignant and painful'\nExpress

Hartley Dean Social Policy
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 25.56 €How do human societies provide for the wellbeing of their members? How far can we organize the ways in which we care for and about each other? And who should take responsibility for providing the support we need? These are some of the fundamental questions addressed by social policy today.\n\n In this introduction, Hartley Dean explains the extraordinary scope and importance of social policy. He explores its foundations and contemporary significance; the principal issues it addresses and their diverse economic, political and sociological dimensions, and concludes by looking anew at fundamental challenges facing social policy in a dramatically changing world.\n\n Introducing social policy as a broadly conceived study of human wellbeing, this revised and extensively updated third edition examines ways in which governments and peoples throughout the world attend to, promote, neglect or even undermine the things that make life worth living. These include essential services like healthcare and education; the means of livelihood – jobs and money – and sometimes intangible things such as physical and emotional security. Trying to understand these elements, which together constitute human wellbeing, is the stuff of social policy.

Dorothy Hartley Made in England
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 22.92 € (+2.70 €)First published in 1939, Made in England is a book about the crafts and people of the cottage industries of England, from the social historian, illustrator and photographer Dorothy Hartley. In the mid 1930s Hartley travelled by car and bicycle, gathering material for the book. This is a portrait not only of the rural industries - whether wood-carving or stone-work, weaving or pottery, but also of the people engaged in these occupations. \n\nWritten in direct prose and with innate curiosity, each chapter covers a specific skill, and is illustrated with Hartley's own photographs and charming, accurate pen and ink drawings. As these traditional skills became less widespread, our own connection to the land and ancient knowledge is threatened. The republication of this book is aimed at restoring some of those lost links, and reviving interest in craft and making by hand.

Stephen Wynn Hartlepool in the Great War
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 26.11 €With the outbreak of the First World War, it was not surprising that a number of individuals who were of German decent, and who lived in Hartlepool and its surrounding areas, were rounded up and detained by the British military authorities, in the interests of both national security and for their own personal safety. They were held at the towns Stranton Ice Rink. Their numbers included the ex-German Consul for the Hartlepool's district as well as others who had been local residents of many years standing.\n\nThe first soldier with connections to Hartlepool to be killed on foreign soil during the war, was Corporal 57561 John Robert Richardson, who was serving with the 54th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, when he was killed in action on 4 October 1914. He is buried at the Bergen Communal Cemetery at Mons.\n\nThe war came to Hartlepool on the morning of Wednesday, 16 December 1914 in the shape of three vessels of the Imperial German Navy. By the time their attack was over, more than 1,100 artillery shells had landed on the town, killing 9 soldiers, 86 civilians and wounding a further 438. Amongst the dead was 29 year old Private 18/295 Theophilus Jones of the 18th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, making him the first British serviceman to be killed on British soil as a result of enemy action during the course of the First World War. Before the war was over, his brother Alfred, would also be killed, during fighting at the Battle of Arras, on 3 May 1917.\n\nBy the time the war had ended, some 1700 men and women from Hartlepool and its surrounding areas had paid the ultimate price of having served their King and country.

Sonia Hartl Heartbreak for Hire: A Novel
Venditore: Ibs.it Prezzo: 20.18 € (+2.70 €)A smart, sexy, and witty romantic comedy-perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Sally Thorne-about a twentysomething who lives out every woman's fantasy: getting paid to give men who do us wrong a taste of their own medicine. But when a previous target unexpectedly shows up at her office, she's forced to rethink her life as a professional heartbreaker.\n\nBrinkley Saunders has a secret.\n \nTo everyone in the academic world she left behind, she lost it all when she dropped out of grad school. Once a rising star following in her mother's footsteps, she's now an administrative assistant at an insurance agency-or so they think.\n \nIn reality, Brinkley works at Heartbreak for Hire, a secret service that specializes in revenge for jilted lovers, frenemies, and long-suffering coworkers with a little cash to spare and a man who needs to be taken down a notch. It might not be as prestigious as academia, but it helps Brinkley save for her dream of opening an art gallery and lets her exorcise a few demons, all while helping to empower women.\n \nBut when her boss announces she's hiring male heartbreakers for the first time, Brinkley's no longer so sure she's doing the right thing-especially when her new coworker turns out to be a target she was paid to take down. Though Mark spends his days struggling up the academic ladder, he seems to be the opposite of a backstabbing adjunct: a nerd at heart in criminally sexy sweater vests who's attentive both in and out of the bedroom. But as Brinkley finds it increasingly more difficult to focus on anything but Mark, she soon realizes that like herself, people aren't always who they appear to be.\n \nWith Sonia Hartl's \"bitingly funny\" (Publishers Weekly) prose, Heartbreak for Hire is a clever romcom you and your girlfriends won't be able to stop talking about.
