Since its founding, the United States has colonized more than five hundred Indigenous nations in North America and dozens more in the Pacific and the Caribbean. Alyssa Hunziker considers how American imperialism in the Pacific—typically thought of as separate from the colonization of North America—is deeply intertwined with US settler colonialism. By examining novels, poems, and archival records, Hunziker analyzes literary convergences between global Indigenous communities, and uses an Indigenous transpacific methodology to examine how contemporary authors from Native America, Hawai'i, Guam, the Marshall Islands, and the Philippines reimagine and uncover their historical connections. \t\n \t\n \tWhile the colonial archive has been discussed in both postcolonial and Indigenous studies, archives appear frequently in contemporary Indigenous fiction. Hunziker contends that Indigenous authors use literary form to emphasize seemingly peripheral, or “extra,” histories that have been erased from official US records. Using literary archives—like a character’s collection of calendars, a degrading film reel, or a discovery of unorganized notes—alongside discussions of institutional archives, the authors under discussion subvert Indigenous erasure by questioning how history is told, and which stories go unrecognized.

In August 1071, the Byzantine Emperor Romanus IV Diogenese led out a powerful army in an attempt to roll back Seljuk Turkish incursions into the Anatolian heartland of the Empire. Outmanoeuvred by the Turkish sultan, Alp Arslan, Romanus was forced to give battle with only half his troops near Manzikert. By the end of that fateful day much of the Byzantine army was dead, the rest scattered in flight and the Emperor himself a captive. As a result, the Anatolian heart was torn out of the Empire and it was critically weakened, while Turkish power expanded rapidly, eventually leading to Byzantine appeals for help from Western Europe, thus prompting the First Crusade. This book sets the battle in the context of the military history of the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic World (Arab and Seljuk Turkish) up to the pivotal engagement at Manzikert in 1071, with special emphasis on the origins, course and outcome of this battle. The composition, weapons and tactics of the very different opposing armies are analysed. The final chapter is dedicated to assessing the impact of Manzikert on the Byzantine Empire's strategic position in Anatolia and to the battle's role as a _causus belli_ for the Crusades. In AD 1071, the Byzantine Emperor, Romanos IV Diogenes, set out from Constantinople for the eastern borders of his Empire with an army described as “more numerous than the sands of the sea”. His military campaign culminated in defeat by the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan at the Battle of Mantzikert. This defeat was to have profound consequences for both Byzantine and Turkish history and is still commemorated in the modern state of Turkey. Yet the historical sources for this campaign contain significant gaps and we know more about the political intrigues surrounding the emperor than we do about how the army moved and fed itself.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ‘Medieval Warfare on the Grid’ project (2007-2011) was funded by an AHRC-EPSRC-Jisc e-Science grant and set out to use computer simulation to shed new light on the Mantzikert campaign. In this book we present the results of the project and demonstrate that computer simulation has an important role to play in the analysis of pre-modern military logistics. It can give new context to historical sources, present new options for the interpretation of past events and enable questions of greater complexity to be asked of historical military campaigns. It can also highlight the similarities that exist across time and space when armies need to be mobilised, moved and fed.
