They now export their delicious wines all over the world, and specialise in crafting traditional local wines like Amarone della Valpolicella and Prosecco. The family also makes more modern and innovative styles such as this easy-drinking Primitivo, which is the Italian name for Zinfandel. The fruit for this punchy red is sourced in Puglia and is harvested by hand and rapidly transported to the winery to preserve the quality. The grapes are then fermented in temperature-controlled tanks and then aged in wooden barrels for 6 months before bottling. While Italian Primitivo can be a bit more stern and tannic than Zinfandel, this silky smooth version combines the best from both styles. Luscious and seductive cassis, blackberry and dark plum notes burst out of the glass while the first sip reveals a generous full body, velvety texture, and a bold finish with plenty of seductive fruit notes. The winery was founded in 1968, through the determination of Eugenio Tinazzi. Ownership has since passed down to his son Gian Andrea, who is joined by his two children, Giorgio and Francesca. From relatively humble beginnings, a single estate on the shores of Lake Garda, Tinazzi has become a company in a state of constant growth. They have acquired several estates and cellars all across Italy, including a stake in Puglia, home of the large, robust Primitivo. This 2019 Primitivo is a deep ruby red, bursting with flavours of bold black fruits. It has an intense nose, with notes of plum, dark cherries, and spicy cinnamon. The red soils of the Taranto region combined with its scorching sun have produced an undeniably potent grape. This is a warm and filling vintage, with excellent structure and a long, enveloping finish. It can be relished immediately, or cellared for further aging. The high attention to detail and tiny yields means that the estate only produces 15,000 bottles in total each year which are quickly snapped up by Italian wine connoisseurs.

Famous for the production of Gavi, La Bollina works with a number of regional varieties including Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Chardonnay to name a few. The wine production is managed by Marco Roveda, with help from enologist Andrea Zampieri and agronomist Franco Fierri. The three comprise a team focused on high-quality wines that embody the unique characteristics of the terroir and grape varieties. With a highly modernized winery, La Bollina utilizes some of the newest techniques in winemaking including a micro-oxygenation system and special filtration technique that keeps the wine intact even through its final stages of production. Tavros Primitivo di Manduria is 100% Primitivo, or Zinfandel as it is known outside of the region. The nose is greeted by a bouquet of sweet ripe fruit, dark chocolate espresso beans, cinnamon rolls and shaved vanilla. A punch of tobacco and cedarwood comes through with a touch of leather. On the palate this wine shows the richness of the nose with sweet flavors balanced by its full mouthfeel. This wine is off-dry with bold tannins and soft acidity making it a great match with dinner or dessert. Enjoy with beef, lamb, and pasta dishes, or with dark chocolate for a night cap.

It is very dark purple in the glass, verging on black. It spent 12 months ageing in oak barrels before bottling. This is a great wine for pairing with steak, charcuterie, or eggplant parmesan.

Set in a gorgeous corner of Salento surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and the Mediterranean Sea, Feudi Salentini specialises in delicious wines made according to local winemaking traditions. Today the estate is run by the third generation of the family represented by Cosimo and Maria Teresa Varvaglione who prioritise quality and attention to detail. Many of the vines are planted free-standing as they have been here for centuries and the grapes are harvested by hand to ensure they arrive at the winery in excellent condition. The grapes are then macerated and fermented in temperature controlled tanks and left to mature in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 10 months. The result is a luscious full bodied red wine with ample dark berry and cherry flavours seasoned with licorice, bitter chocolate, cinnamon and cloves from the oak ageing. The firm tannins, rounded texture, well-defined structure and juicy fruit flavours which linger on the tongue make this a great partner for rich meat stews, steak, or barbecued ribs. It can also be kept in the cellar for another few years where it will continue to evolve and develop.

Giuseppe Attanasio founded his namesake estate in 2000 and today he works 8 hectares of vineyards in Manduria in Italy’s southern Salento region. Attanasio has been involved in winemaking for more than six decades and brings a wealth of experience to this young project working with the local Primitivo grape variety. Low yields, an extremely arid climate and great attention to detail mean that Attanasio only produces around 15,000 bottles per year in his cavernous cellar beneath a 19th century palace. Attanasio’s Reserva is sure to impress lovers of big, bold reds thanks to its classic southern Italian profile of ripe dark fruit flavours and a remarkably smooth texture. On the nose there are enticing aromas of cassis, dark cherry, licorice and mint while the first sip reveals plenty of ripe plum, jammy berries and sweet spices from the oak ageing. The wine is crafted from top quality fruit grown on bush vines on the typical local “terra rossa” or “red earth” soils. Attanasio vinifies the wines in stainless steel tanks with a lengthy maceration to capture the natural character of the grape variety. The young wines then age in 225 litre barrels for 12 months followed by 24 months in 114 litre French oak barrels.

The nose is an explosion of bright cherries, sweet plum jam, and hints of licorice, sandalwood and cinnamon while the first sip reveals a rich full body, smooth texture, an intense hit of ripe dark berries and a very long finish. To craft this powerful wine San Marzano only use grapes harvested from their 60 to 100 year old vines which produce tiny quantities of intensely flavoured fruit. This 40 hectare vineyard known as the Valle del Sessantanni or “Sixty-Year-Old Valley” is one of the oldest in San Marzano and contains bush vines which had been abandoned prior to their discovery and rehabilitation by the Cantine San Marzano. The terra rossa or ‘red soil” here is rich in iron which gives the vineyard its striking colour and combines with the warm climate to offer ideal growing conditions for the Primitivo grape. Following the harvest and fermentation of the must, the wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 months to add sweet spice character and additional complexity. Ideal for savouring on a cold winter’s evening by the fire, this characterful wine also makes an excellent partner for hearty meat dishes like a lamb chop, beef stew, or fresh pasta served with a rich ragu sauce.

Primitivo di Manduria Riserva is one of the winery's most representative and iconic wines, a tribute to the winemaking and family traditions that began in the 1920s. After harvesting and fermenting at a controlled temperature in wood, the finished wine rests for 1.5 years in large barrels before being further aged in stainless steel for another 9 months. In the bottle, the wine reveals an intense and deep garnet red color. Its aromatic profile is broad and expressive, with fragrant notes of ripe fruits such as black cherries, wild berries, and plums, and hints of dried figs, vanilla, cloves, and black pepper. On the palate, it is soft, concentrated, and elegant, with a velvety texture and silky tannins. It is powerful without being opulent, with a long, warm finish that evokes light spicy notes.
